2025 National Freshwater Spearfishing Tournament — Lake Pleasant, Arizona

The 2025 National Freshwater Spearfishing Tournament at Lake Pleasant was a weekend full of adventure, learning, and community spirit, with over 65 divers gathering under the intense Arizona sun. For many, it was not only their first time diving in Arizona but also their first experience spearfishing in freshwater — and it proved to be unforgettable.

The desert landscape greeted competitors with dramatic mountain silhouettes and towering cacti, and temperatures soaring to 100°F made the cool waters of Lake Pleasant all the more inviting. Divers quickly learned that the Arizona sun was relentless, with more than a few sporting fresh sunburns and hastily applied sunscreen as the tournament wore on.

The competition itself brought unique challenges and thrills. Fish were plentiful early in the day, and many divers found success in the shallows, targeting carp and shad. Surface shots on skittish shad proved effective, while carp were often ambushed from rocky ledges. Striped bass added an extra layer of excitement, lurking deeper around 40 feet and requiring a stealthy approach and smooth duck-dives to get within range.

Midway through the tournament, a noticeable lull set in, with nearly two hours passing where fish sightings were few and far between. However, persistence paid off: many competitors, refusing to give in to frustration, were rewarded with a final burst of action in the last 45 minutes. One diver ended with an impressive 68 fish by the close of the tournament.

The event wasn’t just about the numbers — it was also about camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the joy of new experiences. Friendships were forged, techniques were shared, and countless lessons were learned. Notably, a team secured second place in the women’s division, celebrating the hard work and determination that defined the entire competition.

As the sun set over Lake Pleasant, tired but smiling divers reflected on the weekend's highs and challenges, already looking forward to the next Nationals and the new memories still to be made.
